Peridot - August's Birthstone

Peridot is a gem quality of the mineral olivine, also called chrysolite, an iron magnesium silicate. Color ranges from yellowish green to olive green.

The intensity of the color depends on how much iron is present. The best colored stones have an iron content of <15%. It’s ~6.5-7 on the Mohs’ hardness scale for minerals, a bit softer than quartz.

Metaphysically speaking, peridot is said to foster emotional balance and help heal the wearer from past emotional wounds.

It is reputed to clear the heart and heal damaged egos, bringing healing and vitality to the whole body.

Peridot is considered to be a good stone for healers, releasing negative vibrations and promoting clarity/well-being – a stone of rebirth and renewal.

Green is the color of good fortune or money. Keeping peridot in your cash drawer attracts money, and combining it with citrine helps you keep it!

Peridot is my own birthstone, and as I child I didn’t like it, but I’ve grown to appreciate its beauty as an adult. I still prefer garnets, of course! But I’m no longer immune to the charm of this lovely stone.
