Of rainbows and chalices

That bracelet-in-progress I posted a picture of a little bit ago is finally finished!  It'll be donated to my church's charity auction fundraiser this fall.  It's a Unitarian Universalist church, which is why I added the hammered silver chalice charm.  I may enjoy its sparkle out and about a bit before the auction arrives.

Most of the beads are crystal, but I couldn't find a yellow bright enough, so that one color is a faceted dyed agate.

A Year in the Making, day 316

It rained again today. But you know, I'm alright with that. Because rain and cool weather is much preferable to breaking 90 degrees Fahrenheit. I wasn't a big fan of the heat when I lived in New Orleans, and I was there 9 years so it's not like I didn't have a chance to get used to it. And now, after 12 years (almost exactly) in the great and temperate Pacific Northwest, I'm even less disinclined to react favorably to excesses in temperature.

And the rain does bring lovely green growing things, doesn't it? It definitely put me in a green sort of mood today. Whether that green is a result of verdant growth or mold, I'll let you decide.

With the long summer days, I actually had time to go out and socialize (I made this while chatting with friends this evening at a local coffeehouse), and still have enough lovely diffuse light in which to photograph this when I got home!

It's overcast today, but just the perfect temperature. A little cool, so you don't get overheated taking a nice walk about the neighborhood. Just right!

A Year in the Making, day 226

Arm was feeling fine today, no harm done yesterday it seems. So I added to the pile this morning:



And because that went so well, I made a new bracelet too, to continue the blue theme:

And I also baked bread today! I made two loaves, a herb & cheese and a wine & cheese. We had slices of the first with our salad for dinner this evening, and it was tasty. Warm fresh bread - yum!

I'm back in the pearl box again! And the steampunk-y watch bits, too. This style of earrings seems to be rather popular, for which I'm glad, because they're fun to make:

A Year in the Making, day 154

It's been bright and sunny and cold, which isn't nice. The gorgeous skies out the window make you think of spring, but then you go out and freeze. Blue fingers, blue toes, blue nose. So today, you get a blue bracelet!

Some cobalt blue beads, the last of the strand, but just enough to make an 8" bracelet! I added tiny little sterling silver beads to eke out the length just enough:

Today, I worked on the dress I'm planning on wearing when I vend at this year's Vampire Ball. I found this dress, a vintage Gunne Sax wedding dress, at a thrift store a few weeks ago. It was a bit worse for wear, so ripe for alteration, yes? I added a slit in front, finished the slit with some nubbly trim from the stash, then put it in a black RIT dyebath. It's always a mystery how these dresses will react to the dye. I had two dresses once, that according to their labels were the same fabrics, that came out two completely different colors. One was more purple, the other bluer.

This one turned out a wonderful smokey lavender shade, with the lace turning a charcoal grey. The pearls and the trim I added stayed white.



Of course looking at this picture, my very first thought was "Good god, I need to redye my hair! Look at my roots!" Vanity, thy name is Goth.

I put together another bracelet today while babysitting the dyebath. I've had these beads for years. I fell in love with them at a gem show and spent entirely too much money for them, and haven't ever used them because I spent so much money on them. Silly kitty. They're discs of faceted smokey quartz that have been electroplated with an aurora borealis finish, truly stunning beads.
